31 Minutos began as a satirical newscast on Chilean network TVN, first broadcast on March 15, 2003, produced by the company Aplaplac and its founders Álvaro Díaz, Pedro Peirano and Juan Manuel Egaña. Tulio Triviño anchored the desk, with Juan Carlos Bodoque filing field reports, all played by puppets treated as a real news team.
The songs were written by Pablo Ilabaca, Daniel Castro and the show's creators, covering subjects such as a boy who eats too much, a cursed necklace and a man who lives in a bag. Three seasons aired between 2003 and 2005, followed by a 2008 film and a fourth season in 2014, closing with an episode broadcast on December 27 of that year.
Nickelodeon carried the program across Latin America from 2004 to 2007, and Cartoon Network picked it up from 2015 onward. In Mexico it also aired on Canal Once and Once Niñas y Niños, with the most recent season later made available on Netflix.
Numbers such as 'Mi Muñeca Me Habló' and 'Bailan Sin Cesar' outgrew the programme entirely. Concerts put the puppets on stage with a live band across Chile and Mexico, playing to audiences who first heard the material as children in the early 2000s.
