Mundo Livre S/A came together in Recife around singer and songwriter Fred Zero Quatro, who wrote the manifesto "Caranguejos com Cérebro" that gave the mangue movement its argument: the mud of the Capibaribe estuary as a place to plug local rhythm into satellite dishes and imported noise. Alongside Chico Science & Nação Zumbi, the band set maracatu and samba percussion against punk guitar and funk bass, with lyrics turning on Recife itself, its poverty, its politics and its media.
Their first album, Samba Esquema Noise, borrowed its title from Jorge Ben's Samba Esquema Novo and made the joke audible in the playing, samba forms roughed up and pushed through distortion. Fred Zero Quatro has remained the constant voice at the front of the group.
