Los Bunkers
Chilean band out of Concepción with a deep sixties pop streak running through their guitar rock, plus a whole record of Silvio Rodríguez covers.
Los Bunkers formed in Concepción in 1999, built around two sets of brothers, Francisco and Mauricio Durán and Álvaro and Gonzalo López, and went on to become one of the most widely heard Chilean rock bands of the following decade. The band's name plays on the letters B and K, nodding to the Beatles and the Kinks, and doubles as a word for a refuge, an image drawn from what music meant to them growing up.
Their songwriting leans on Beatles-era chord movement and vocal harmony, alongside a growing interest over the years in Chilean folk roots, particularly the New Chilean Song movement of the 1960s. "Llueve sobre la ciudad" was among the songs that carried Los Bunkers beyond Chile, and the band later based itself in Mexico City.
Original drummer Mauricio Basualto rounded out the founding lineup and stayed with the band, on and off, through most of its history. In 2010 the group recorded Música libre, an album of Silvio Rodríguez songs rearranged for electric guitars and drums, turning an acoustic folk songbook into straightforward rock arrangements.
Los Bunkers stopped playing in 2014, reunited briefly in 2019, and returned to the stage properly in 2022, with the same core lineup of Durán and López brothers intact. Basualto stayed with the band until 2024, when he was replaced by drummer Cancamusa (Natalia Pérez).
