Bab L'Bluz

1 upcoming festival

Moroccan-French power quartet electrifying Gnawa trance-blues — hypnotic guembri grooves plugged in and turned up into full-band psychedelic ecstasy.

Bab L'Bluz is a quartet formed between Morocco and France, fronted by singer and guembri player Yousra Mansour alongside French multi-instrumentalist Brice Bottin. The group takes the repertoire and trance rhythms of Gnawa music and plays them through amplified guembri and awisha, drums and rock dynamics, with vocals in Moroccan Darija, Arabic and French.

Their music draws openly on the North African tradition of Nayda as well as on psychedelic rock and blues, and Mansour's presence as a woman leading a guembri-based band is unusual in a tradition historically dominated by male maâlems. Live, the sets are built around long, repetitive grooves that build in intensity.
