RÓIS
Sean-nós tradition spliced with electronics — Ireland's eeriest new voice, keening rendered as avant-garde ritual, old songs made newly unsettling.
RÓIS is the recording name of Róisín Ní Haicéid, a musician from County Fermanagh who works with Irish-language traditional song, particularly sean-nós and keening, and reshapes it using electronics, field recordings and improvisation. Her arrangements strip the old material back to voice and drone before layering it with unsettled textures, and she has collaborated with musicians from Ireland's experimental and jazz scenes. The result sits closer to ritual and sound art than to conventional folk revival.
