Declan Mckenna

2 festivals played

'Brazil' wunderkind grown into a glam-flecked festival veteran at 27 — big-hearted indie-pop with a political streak and a wardrobe to match.

Declan McKenna grew up in Hertfordshire and first drew attention as a teenager with "Brazil," a song critical of FIFA and the 2014 World Cup, after winning the Glastonbury Emerging Talent Competition. His debut album What Do You Think About the Car? collected several of those early singles and established a template of bright indie-pop melodies carrying lyrics about politics, media and adolescence.

The follow-up, Zeros, moved toward glam and space-rock influences, with fuller arrangements and a more theatrical presentation. He has continued to write and record with the same combination of hooks and social commentary, and performs with a full band.
