Derya Yıldırım is a singer and bağlama player of Turkish descent, born and raised in Hamburg, who leads Grup Şimşek with musicians based between Germany, France and the United Kingdom. The group works in the Anatolian rock and psychedelic folk tradition associated with Turkish artists of the 1960s and 70s.
Their repertoire mixes interpretations of Turkish folk songs and standards with original material, arranged around Yıldırım's saz playing and unhurried vocals, organ, bass and drums. The results lean towards long, circling grooves rather than short songs, with lyrics sung mainly in Turkish.
