KMFDM
German industrial-rock built on sloganeering, disco-stomp drums, and Aidan Hughes's woodcut sleeve art — self-described 'ultra-heavy beat', four decades strong.
KMFDM was founded in Hamburg in 1984 by Sascha Konietzko as a performance-art project rather than a conventional band. Early lineups included drummer En Esch and British vocalist Raymond Watts, who left and rejoined repeatedly. The group later relocated to the United States and found its widest audience through the industrial label Wax Trax!, with guitarist Günter Schulz joining in 1990.
The band's sound combines heavy guitar riffs, four-to-the-floor electronic drums and shouted, slogan-like vocals in English and German, what Konietzko calls "ultra heavy beat". The lyrics have consistently taken aim at violence, war and oppression, giving the music a political edge alongside its dancefloor stomp.
Nearly all of KMFDM's sleeves carry the bold woodcut-style illustrations of British artist Aidan Hughes, working as Brute!, a visual signature as recognisable as the music itself.
The band broke up in 1999 and was revived by Konietzko in 2002 on Metropolis Records, with Schulz and Esch declining to return. By 2005 a steady lineup had formed around Konietzko, Lucia Cifarelli, Jules Hodgson, guitarist Steve White and drummer Andy Selway, though Hodgson and White later moved on. Across twenty-two studio albums, members have also recorded under side projects including Pig, Excessive Force and Slick Idiot, with worldwide sales past two million records.
