German industrial-rock built on sloganeering, disco-stomp drums, and Aidan Hughes's woodcut sleeve art — self-described 'ultra-heavy beat', four decades strong.
KMFDM was founded in Hamburg in 1984 by Sascha Konietzko, initially as a performance-art project before developing into one of the defining acts of industrial rock. The lineup has shifted constantly over the decades, with Konietzko the sole constant; longtime collaborators have included Lucia Cifarelli and guitarist Jules Hodgson, among many others.
The band's sound combines heavy guitar riffs, four-to-the-floor electronic drums and shouted, slogan-like vocals in both English and German — what Konietzko has termed "ultra heavy beat". Equally distinctive is the visual identity: nearly all of the band's sleeves feature the bold woodcut-style illustrations of British artist Aidan Hughes, working as Brute!.
