AFI
Hardcore kids who became goths and then a genuinely huge rock band — Davey Havok's full-commitment melodrama riding a catalog that runs from East Bay punk to 'Miss Murder'-era anthems.
AFI formed in Ukiah, California in 1991, initially as a hardcore punk band. The long-running lineup centres on vocalist Davey Havok and guitarist Jade Puget, with Hunter Burgan on bass and Adam Carson on drums. Over the 1990s the group moved from East Bay punk toward a darker, goth-inflected sound, and albums such as Sing the Sorrow and Decemberunderground brought them to a much wider rock audience.
Their music combines melodic hardcore roots with new wave and post-punk textures, layered vocal harmonies and heavily theatrical lyrics. "Miss Murder" remains their most widely recognised single.
