My Chemical Romance formed in New Jersey in 2001, with Gerard Way on vocals, his brother Mikey Way on bass, and guitarists Ray Toro and Frank Iero. Early records leaned on post-hardcore aggression before the band moved toward larger, more elaborate rock built around narrative concepts, layered guitar harmonies and staged visual identities that changed with each album.

They became one of the most widely known bands associated with 2000s emo, split in 2013, and reunited later in the decade. Gerard Way is also a comics writer, best known for creating The Umbrella Academy.
