Post-hardcore's elder statesmen — heavy, literate, endlessly evolving, and never once coasting on the back catalog.

Thrice began with Dustin Kensrue and Teppei Teranishi, who knew each other from high school in Irvine, California. Teranishi recruited his skate-park friend Eddie Breckenridge to play bass, and Eddie brought in his brother Riley on drums, giving the band its four-piece lineup in 1998.

The early records leaned on melodic hardcore punk built from heavily distorted guitars and frequent shifts in time signature, a style laid out on second album The Illusion of Safety in 2002 before The Artist in the Ambulance brought the band a wider audience the following year.

From Vheissu onward the band moved steadily away from that template, taking in post-rock, electronics and blues. The four-part Alchemy Index EPs organised this experimentation around the elemental themes of fire, water, air and earth, and the albums Beggars and Major/Minor that followed refined those explorations further.

Thrice announced a final tour and went on hiatus in 2012, reforming in 2015 after Kensrue and Teranishi attended a Brand New concert together. Their first post-reunion album, To Be Everywhere Is to Be Nowhere, arrived in 2016.

The band has kept releasing music with the same four-piece lineup that started it all, including Palms in 2018 and Horizons/East in 2021. Each album has had a portion of its sales proceeds donated to a different charitable organisation.
