Coheed and Cambria
Sci-fi concept-rock saga with arena hooks — 'Welcome Home' indeed, the Amory Wars mythology powering some of modern prog's biggest singalongs.
Coheed and Cambria formed in Nyack, New York, in 1995, when Claudio Sanchez and Travis Stever's earlier band dissolved and they regrouped as Shabütie before settling on their current name. The new name came from a 1998 trip to Paris, when the pair decided to call the band after two protagonists in the science-fiction story Sanchez was developing, and it stuck.
Sanchez's high, distinctive voice remains the band's most recognisable feature, set against songs that draw on progressive rock structures, post-hardcore energy and straightforward pop melody in roughly equal measure. Most of their albums form part of the Amory Wars, a science-fiction narrative Sanchez has also developed through comic books and a full-length novel, complete with its own logo, the Keywork, representing the story's planetary alignment.
Their 2002 debut, The Second Stage Turbine Blade, arrived through Equal Vision Records and carried the influence of post-hardcore band At the Drive-In, with a guest appearance from Bad Brains guitarist Dr. Know. 'Welcome Home,' from Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume One, remains their best-known song. Across eleven studio albums and three live records, six entries have reached the Billboard Top 10.
Bassist Travis Stever has played guitar alongside Sanchez since the beginning, with Josh Eppard on drums and Zach Cooper on bass rounding out the group's current lineup. The band has continued releasing concept records across three decades, most recently Vaxis Act III: The Father of Make Believe in 2025.
