The Strokes formed in New York City in the late 1990s around singer Julian Casablancas, guitarists Nick Valensi and Albert Hammond Jr., bassist Nikolai Fraiture and drummer Fabrizio Moretti. Their debut, Is This It, paired interlocking guitar lines and terse rhythms with Casablancas's flat, filtered vocals, and became a reference point for the garage-rock revival of the early 2000s.
Later albums pushed further toward synthesisers and more elaborate arrangements while keeping the two-guitar interplay at the centre. The members have pursued various solo and side projects across long gaps between records, and the band has continued to tour and release new material.
