Pavement formed in Stockton, California, in 1989 around Stephen Malkmus and Scott Kannberg, and became one of the defining American indie rock bands of the 1990s. Early recordings were lo-fi and deliberately ragged; later albums brought clearer production without losing the loose, off-hand quality that characterised the group — oblique lyrics, guitars that wander in and out of tune, songs that seem to assemble themselves as they go.
The band broke up at the end of the 1990s, with Malkmus going on to record with the Jicks. Pavement have since reunited for periodic runs of shows, playing the catalogue with much the same unhurried, faintly ironic manner that made their reputation in the first place.
