Wet Leg
Deadpan, hook-loaded post-punk — the Isle of Wight duo grown into a full-blast rock band, 'Chaise Longue' just the opening joke.
Wet Leg formed on the Isle of Wight in 2019 around Rhian Teasdale and Hester Chambers, who write the songs and share vocals. Teasdale had moved to the island from Formby as a child and spent years performing locally, including a spell recording as RHAIN with ties to Bristol's music scene, before she and Chambers, who had met at Platform One College of Music, began writing together.
Their first single, "Chaise Longue", arrived in 2021 on Domino and drew rapid attention online. A self-titled debut album followed in 2022, entering at number one on both the UK and Australian albums charts and earning a shortlist place for the Mercury Prize that year.
The music sits between indie rock and post-punk revival: clipped guitar figures, blunt rhythm-section playing, and lyrics delivered flat and dry, often about boredom, awkward parties and unhelpful men. Teasdale and Chambers have named PJ Harvey, the White Stripes and the Strokes among their influences.
On stage the duo is filled out into a full band, and the live arrangements push the songs harder and louder than the recorded versions. Guitarist and keyboardist Josh Mobaraki, bassist Ellis Durand and drummer Henry Holmes joined as touring musicians before becoming full members of the group.
The debut album won Wet Leg two Grammy Awards, for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Alternative Music Performance for "Chaise Longue", and two Brit Awards, for Best New Artist and Best British Group. Their second album, Moisturizer, released in 2025 as a five-piece, also reached number one in the UK.
