Deadpan spoken-word over wiry post-punk — Florence Shaw's found-text poetry delivered motionless while the band churns behind her.

Dry Cleaning formed in south London in 2017. Guitarist Tom Dowse, bassist Lewis Maynard and drummer Nick Buxton had known each other for years, having played separately in local bands; Buxton and Maynard had previously been in the group La Shark, recording under the names NHA Buxton and Love Maynard. The three began practising together in Maynard's mother's garage.

Florence Shaw, who had known the others since school and worked as a university lecturer like Dowse, joined the band in 2018 after they invited her to speak over recorded demos. Rather than sing, she delivers lyrics collaged from overheard phrases, internet text, adverts and diary fragments, in a flat, unhurried register.

The band's music sits in the post-punk lineage, drawing comparisons to Wire, Magazine and Joy Division. Taut basslines, angular guitar figures and steady drumming leave plenty of space around the vocal, so Shaw's spoken lines sit against the music rather than blending into it.

After two EPs, the band signed to 4AD. Their albums, produced by John Parish, include New Long Leg in 2021, Stumpwork in 2022 and Secret Love in 2026, and drew wide critical attention for the contrast between Shaw's deadpan delivery and the band's melodic, sometimes expansive playing.
