Whispered minimalism that somehow fills a festival field — intimacy at headline scale, 'Intro' still raising arm hair.
The xx formed in London in the mid-2000s around school friends Romy Madley Croft, Oliver Sim and Jamie Smith, who records separately as Jamie xx. Their music is built on restraint: clean, reverbed guitar figures, spare bass lines, programmed percussion and a great deal of silence, with Madley Croft and Sim trading close, conversational vocals about desire and distance.
Their self-titled debut established that sound and won the Mercury Prize, and subsequent albums pushed further towards dance music through Smith's production. Live, the trio keeps the arrangements sparse and relies on lighting and low-end weight to carry the songs across large spaces.
