The NZ art-pop auteur — brooding, minimal, and generation-defining, back on a headline stage where the whispered verses hit hardest.

Lorde is the recording name of Ella Yelich-O'Connor, born in 1996 in Takapuna, a suburb of Auckland, to poet Sonja Yelich and civil engineer Vic O'Connor. She was noticed performing at a school talent show, signed to Universal Music Group in 2009, and began working with producer Joel Little two years later.

Her first release, The Love Club EP, was given away free on SoundCloud in 2012 before a commercial release the following year. Its single 'Royals' spent nine weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 and has sold roughly ten million copies worldwide, carrying Pure Heroine's sparse, observational songwriting to wide attention while she was still a teenager.

Melodrama, made with producer Jack Antonoff, brought a fuller, piano-driven sound in 2017. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was later placed on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

Solar Power, released in 2021, moved toward acoustic guitar and lighter textures and drew a more divided response from critics and listeners. Her fourth album, Virgin, followed in 2025, made with Jim-E Stack and returning to electronic-based pop, work that met steadier critical acclaim.

Across the records she has worked closely with a small number of collaborators, Little, Antonoff and Stack among them, and kept a slow release schedule with long gaps between albums. She has also co-written songs for Broods and Bleachers, and her live sets favour dynamics and space, with quiet passages given as much weight as the choruses.
