Gelli Haha is the project of Los Angeles-based musician Angel Abaya, working in a theatrical strain of synth-driven art-pop. The songs lean on blunt, repetitive hooks, squelching keyboard tones and a deadpan sense of the ridiculous, and the project is built as much around costume, choreography and staging as around the recordings themselves. Live, Gelli Haha performs with a band and treats the set as a piece of comic performance art rather than a straight gig.
