Robyn
Dance-pop's patron saint — 'Dancing On My Own' is a communal sacrament, and she rarely plays, which makes every set an event.
Robyn was born Robin Miriam Carlsson in Stockholm in 1979, the child of parents who ran an independent theatre group; growing up around costume and performance shaped her early interest in style. She recorded a Swedish television theme song at twelve, was discovered by singer Meja, and signed to Ricochet Records at fourteen, working early on with producers Max Martin and Denniz Pop.
Her 1995 debut album, Robyn Is Here, produced two Billboard Hot 100 top ten singles, Do You Know (What It Takes) and Show Me Love. Two further albums, My Truth and Don't Stop the Music, followed in 1999 and 2002 but were released only in Sweden.
After that run, she stepped back from the major-label system and founded her own label, Konichiwa. Her self-titled 2005 album reestablished her internationally, earning a Grammy nomination and producing the singles Be Mine! and With Every Heartbeat, the latter reaching number one in the UK; the records that followed were built around synth-pop and club production, plainly worded songs about heartbreak and self-possession made for the dancefloor.
In 2010 she released a trilogy of mini-albums culminating in the full-length Body Talk, which drew three Grammy nominations and three top ten singles: Dancing On My Own, Hang With Me and Indestructible. Dancing On My Own became her signature song, credited with reviving her career, and its account of dancing through grief has proved durable, still cited by later pop writers.
She followed with collaborative EPs, Do It Again with Röyksopp and Love Is Free with La Bagatelle Magique, part of a career built on collaborations across Scandinavian pop and electronic music, then an eighth album, Honey, in 2018. Robyn works slowly, with long gaps between records: after an eight-year hiatus she returned with Sexistential in 2026, which included the top ten single Dopamine.
