Swedish heartbreak in slow motion — from 'I Follow Rivers' to sadcore chanteuse, a decade-plus of gorgeous ache.

Lykke Li, born Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson, grew up moving constantly rather than staying put in Stockholm: five years on a mountaintop in Portugal, stretches in Lisbon and Morocco, winters spent in Nepal and India. Her mother worked as a photographer and her father played in the Swedish punk-reggae band Dag Vag. She later lived briefly in Brooklyn before returning home to record her first album.

She emerged in the late 2000s with the EP Little Bit and then the debut album Youth Novels, produced by Björn Yttling of Peter Bjorn and John alongside Lasse Mårtén. Her early work paired thin, high vocals with sparse percussion and minimal arrangements, performed live with little more than a pared-down drum kit and a necklace strung with percussion instruments.

Later records moved toward heavier drums, reverb-soaked production and a more openly romantic, melancholy register, across albums including Wounded Rhymes, I Never Learn, So Sad So Sexy and Eyeye. She is widely known for "I Follow Rivers," which became a substantial European hit after a remix circulated widely, and for a catalogue that returns repeatedly to loss, desire and self-recrimination.

Alongside her own records she has lent vocals to other artists' work, including Kleerup's self-titled album and Röyksopp's Junior, and contributed the song "Possibility" to the soundtrack of The Twilight Saga: New Moon. Live, she performs with a stark, choreographed presentation that leans on lighting and repetition rather than conventional band dynamics.
