Madeon
A prodigy who grew into a genuine songwriter — dense, sample-stacked electropop with an unusually bright emotional register, joy engineered live.
Madeon is Hugo Leclercq, a producer from Nantes, France, born in 1994, who began composing music at eleven. He first worked under other names before settling on Madeon, an anagram of an earlier alias, and now works out of Los Angeles. He has named the Beatles and Daft Punk as his main influences.
He drew wide attention in 2011 with "Pop Culture," a live mashup of 39 songs performed on a Novation Launchpad and posted to YouTube, gaining millions of views within days. A debut EP, The City, followed in 2012, alongside singles including "Icarus" and "Finale."
His music combines French house filtering and sidechained synths with pop songwriting, layered vocal chops and unusually bright chord choices; he sings on much of his later work rather than relying purely on instrumental builds.
His debut album Adventure appeared in 2015, backed by a North American tour, and Good Faith followed in 2019 with its own supporting tour. Good Faith later received a Grammy nomination for Best Electronic Album.
He toured as an opening act on Lady Gaga's Born This Way Ball and contributed to three tracks on her album Artpop. He has also collaborated with Porter Robinson on "Shelter" and its tour, and produced for other artists.
