Japanese Breakfast is the project of Michelle Zauner, an American musician and writer who previously fronted the Philadelphia band Little Big League. The project began with home-recorded material and has grown into a full band with increasingly elaborate arrangements, moving from lo-fi indie pop toward brighter, more orchestrated dream pop with synthesisers, strings and horns.

Zauner's songwriting has dealt directly with the death of her mother and with Korean American identity, subjects she also explored in her memoir Crying in H Mart. She has additionally composed video game music, and the band's live shows are built around her presence as frontperson, sometimes including a gong.
