Freak Slug is the recording project of Xenya Genovese, a Manchester musician who writes and records songs that sit between indie pop and lo-fi bedroom recording. The material is built around soft, slightly blurred guitar lines and low-key vocals, with production that keeps a home-made texture rather than a polished one.
Shoegaze influence turns up in the guitar tones and in the way the vocals sit inside the mix rather than on top of it. Genovese began releasing music in 2021 with the EP Slow Down Babe, followed by I'm In Love in 2022 and Viva la Vulva in 2023, each one extending the same hazy, guitar-led approach.
Her debut album, I Blow Out Big Candles, was announced in September 2024 and released two months later, gathering the earlier EPs' loose, whispered style into a full-length record. Genovese also handles the project's visual side, sharing the same offhand, surreal tone as the music. In July 2026 she released "Girl, Intentions" as the lead single for a second album, Amulet, due that September.
