Morrissey, born Steven Patrick Morrissey in Manchester in 1959, was the singer and lyricist of the Smiths, the band he formed with guitarist Johnny Marr in 1982. Across four studio albums before their split in 1987, his writing — arch, literate, self-lacerating and often very funny — became one of the defining voices of British guitar music.

His solo career began with Viva Hate in 1988 and has continued for more than three decades, producing singles including "Suedehead" and "Everyday Is Like Sunday" and albums such as Vauxhall and I and You Are the Quarry. He is also known for cancelled shows, for his vegetarianism and animal-rights advocacy, and for political statements that have drawn sustained criticism.
