The Psychedelic Furs
Richard Butler's sandpaper voice over saxophone-flecked post-punk that keeps finding new generations — 'Pretty in Pink' the eternal gateway.
The Psychedelic Furs formed in London at the end of the 1970s around brothers Richard Butler, on vocals, and Tim Butler, on bass. Their early records were rooted in post-punk, with saxophone woven through the arrangements and Richard Butler's hoarse, drawling voice as the defining feature. Over the 1980s the sound moved toward a more polished new wave, yielding songs such as "Love My Way," "Heaven" and "Pretty in Pink," the last of which lent its title to the John Hughes film and reached a far wider audience as a result.
After a hiatus in the 1990s, during which the Butlers worked as Love Spit Love, the band resumed touring and eventually returned to recording new material.
