The Cure formed in Crawley, West Sussex, in the late 1970s around Robert Smith, the only constant member across the band's history. They emerged from punk with the spare, nervy songs of "Three Imaginary Boys" and "Boys Don't Cry," then turned inward on the trilogy of "Seventeen Seconds," "Faith" and "Pornography," records that helped define gothic rock even as Smith resisted the label.
From the mid-1980s the band alternated bleakness with bright pop singles, releasing "The Head on the Door," "Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me," "Disintegration" and "Wish," and scoring hits with "Just Like Heaven," "Lovesong" and "Friday I'm in Love." Their concerts are known for running well past two hours and drawing deeply on the catalogue.
