Ash
Northern Irish power-pop with an absurd hit rate in the late 90s and no interest in slowing the tempo since.
Ash formed in Downpatrick, County Down, while its members were still at school, with Tim Wheeler on guitar and vocals, Mark Hamilton on bass and Rick McMurray on drums. Their 1996 debut album 1977 arrived in the middle of the Britpop years and produced singles including "Girl from Mars" and "Oh Yeah", pairing punk tempos with unusually durable pop melodies. Charlotte Hatherley joined on guitar in the late 1990s and played on Nu-Clear Sounds and Free All Angels, the latter containing "Shining Light" and "Burn Baby Burn", before departing in 2006. The band has continued as a trio, at one point abandoning the album format in favour of a long run of individually released singles. Live, they lean on speed, distortion and short songs.
