Tom Morello is an American guitarist best known as a founding member of Rage Against the Machine and, later, Audioslave and Prophets of Rage. Raised in Libertyville, Illinois, he studied political science at Harvard before moving to Los Angeles, and his playing became widely recognised for unorthodox techniques — toggle-switch stutters, whammy-pedal squeals and DJ-like scratching effects produced entirely on guitar.

Outside those bands he has recorded as The Nightwatchman, a largely acoustic, folk-oriented project, and has released solo albums built around collaborations with singers and players from across rock, hip-hop and pop. He is also known for sustained political activism, particularly around labour organising, and has performed with Bruce Springsteen among others.
