New-generation alt-metal built on a soulful clean vocal and a very modern low end — the format's next arena act in waiting.
Sleep Theory formed in Memphis, Tennessee, in 2019, starting as a solo recording project for vocalist Cullen Moore, a US Army veteran. Bassist Paolo Vergara joined early on, and the band settled into its current lineup with guitarist Daniel Pruitt, who also handles unclean vocals, and drummer Ben Pruitt. The group built its following largely through streaming and short-form video rather than years of club touring.
Musically the band sits between post-grunge and modern metalcore, setting down-tuned, rhythmically heavy guitar and programmed low end against Moore's melodic, R&B-inflected clean vocal. That contrast between soulful lead singing and aggressive instrumentation remains the band's clearest identifying feature. Members have cited Linkin Park, Bring Me the Horizon, Issues, Bad Omens, Beartooth, Saosin and Michael Jackson as influences.
The band's debut EP, Paper Hearts, arrived in 2023, preceded by the singles "Another Way" and "Numb". Streaming carried the release well past typical debut numbers, with the EP generating more than 33 million streams within months, before the band had toured extensively behind it.
A debut album, Afterglow, followed in May 2025 after being announced that February. Sleep Theory supported it with a US tour later in the year alongside acts including Falling in Reverse, Papa Roach and The Used, then set a UK and European run for early 2026.
