Hail the Sun formed in Chico, California in 2009 and are fronted by Donovan Melero, who sings while playing drums. Their music belongs to the strain of post-hardcore sometimes labelled swancore, characterised by clean, high vocals, angular guitar work, frequent time-signature changes and an interest in jazz and math-rock phrasing alongside conventional screamo dynamics.

The band has released a run of albums since the mid-2010s and toured steadily within that scene, becoming one of its more widely known names. Melero's drumming-and-singing setup is central to how the group is presented live, and their arrangements tend to favour abrupt shifts over sustained grooves.
