The Word Alive formed in Phoenix, Arizona, in 2008 and have been fronted for most of their existence by vocalist Telle Smith. The band works in metalcore and post-hardcore, pairing screamed verses and breakdowns with melodic clean choruses, and their later material has folded in more electronic production and programmed elements.

They have released a series of albums through Fearless Records and built their following largely through steady touring in the American metalcore scene.
