Brandi Carlile grew up in Ravensdale, Washington, and began performing in the Seattle area as a teenager, working with twin brothers Tim and Phil Hanseroth, who have remained her long-term writing and playing partners. Her music sits between folk, country and rock, built around a voice that can move from a near-whisper to full-throated belting, often within a single song.

Beyond her own records, Carlile is known as a collaborator and advocate: she has worked extensively as a producer and duet partner, and is a member of the country group The Highwomen. She is openly gay and has spoken frequently about queer visibility in country and Americana music. Her live shows lean on close family-band harmonies and stripped-back arrangements as often as they do on full-band arrangements.
