Kacey Musgraves grew up in Golden, a small town in northeast Texas, and worked her way through the Texas songwriting circuit and a stint on the televised talent show Nashville Star before signing to a major Nashville label. Her 2013 debut, Same Trailer Different Park, introduced a writing style built on close observation and a conversational, faintly deadpan delivery, with songs like "Merry Go 'Round" and "Follow Your Arrow" drawing attention for their frankness about small-town life.

Later records widened the palette: Pageant Material stayed close to traditional country instrumentation, while her 2018 album added disco pulses, vocoder and soft-focus production, and won the Grammy for Album of the Year. Star-Crossed and Deeper Well followed. Live, she tends to favour pedal steel and clean electric guitar over volume, letting the lyrics carry the weight.
