Foo Fighters began in 1994 as a solo project for Dave Grohl, recorded largely alone in the aftermath of Nirvana's end, before becoming a full band. Grohl moved from drums to guitar and lead vocals, and the group settled into a sound built on loud-quiet dynamics, layered guitars and choruses pitched for large crowds. Long-serving members include Nate Mendel on bass, Pat Smear and Chris Shiflett on guitars and Rami Jaffee on keys; drummer Taylor Hawkins died in 2022.

Across a long run of albums they have produced a deep catalogue of rock radio staples, and their shows are known for running long, with Grohl talking to the audience between songs.
