La Luz

1 upcoming festival

Reverb-soaked surf guitar under close vocal harmonies — noir beach music with a psychedelic edge and a séance's calm.

La Luz is an American band led by singer and guitarist Shana Cleveland, formed in Seattle before Cleveland relocated to California. The group works in a style rooted in surf rock and early-1960s instrumental guitar music, with heavy reverb, tremolo, and clean single-note leads, but softens it with layered close harmony singing and organ.

The results lean darker and dreamier than most surf revivalism, with slow tempos and minor keys as often as fast shuffles. Cleveland also records solo material, and La Luz's records have been produced by collaborators including Ty Segall and Adrian Younge.
