Portugal. The Man formed in Wasilla, Alaska, in 2004, built around John Gourley and Zach Carothers, and later relocated to Portland, Oregon. Their early records were prolific and psychedelic, leaning on falsetto vocals, layered guitars and concept-minded album structures, and they built an audience through near-constant touring long before radio noticed them.

That changed with "Feel It Still," a widely played single that turned the band into a mainstream fixture. The group has kept the psych-rock elements in its live show, where songs are often stretched, medleyed or spliced with covers, and the band has been vocal about political and social causes, including advocacy work connected to Alaska Native communities.
