Welsh- and Cornish-language psych-pop with a krautrock pulse underneath — minority-language records that come out expansive and forward-looking rather than archival.

Gwenno Saunders was born in Cardiff in 1981 to a Cornish-language poet and linguist father and a Welsh-speaking mother, growing up with both languages spoken in the house. As a child she trained in Irish dance, and by seventeen was performing in Michael Flatley's Lord of the Dance and Feet of Flames, including a lead role in a Las Vegas production, and she also had a role in the Welsh soap opera Pobol y Cwm.

Before her solo career she sang with the indie-pop group the Pipettes, taking lead vocals on "Pull Shapes", an experience some distance from the records she makes now. She also spent time as a touring synth player, joining Pnau and Elton John's live band in 2012.

Her solo albums include Y Dydd Olaf, sung largely in Welsh, and Le Kov and Tresor, sung in Cornish; Tresor was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize, and a further album, Utopia, followed in 2025. The music leans on analogue synthesisers, repetitive rhythm sections and layered vocals, closer to European art-pop and motorik rock than folk revival, with subject matter running to memory, place, technology and the position of small languages.

Y Dydd Olaf won the Welsh Music Prize. Gwenno has also presented radio programmes on minority-language music, including a documentary for BBC Radio 4 called Songs from the Edgelands.
