Motorik repetition welded to lounge-pop sweetness — vintage Moog drone, Lætitia Sadier's bilingual cool, and a back catalogue that half of modern indie has quietly been mining for thirty years.

Stereolab formed in London in 1990 out of the wreckage of McCarthy, Tim Gane's earlier indie pop band from Barking known for its left-wing politics. Gane met French singer Lætitia Sadier at a 1988 McCarthy show in Paris; disillusioned with the French rock scene, she moved to London and sang on McCarthy's final album before the band split and the two formed Stereolab together with bassist Martin Kean, drummer Joe Dilworth and Gina Morris on backing vocals.

The band took its name from a division of Vanguard Records that once demonstrated hi-fi sound effects. Gane and Sadier set up their own label, Duophonic, releasing the EP Super 45 in 1991 as its first title; their early records leaned more toward guitars and rock dynamics than the pointillist keyboard sound that would define them.

That signature sound settled around steady, repeating rhythms borrowed from early-1970s German rock, layered vintage analogue keyboards and organs, and close vocal harmonies, initially between Sadier and Mary Hansen, who joined in 1992. Lyrics moved between English and French and drew on Marxist and situationist ideas.

Gane and Sadier were a couple for fourteen years and remain the group's only constant members. Drummer Andy Ramsay joined in 1993, the same year the High Llamas' Sean O'Hagan came aboard on guitar and keyboards; he left in 1994 but kept turning up as a guest on later records.

Stereolab recorded prolifically through the 1990s, often working with Tortoise's John McEntire, and were eventually released from their contract with Elektra, with Duophonic instead striking distribution deals with Too Pure and then Warp. Hansen's death in 2002 preceded a hiatus at the decade's end; the group returned to live shows in 2019 and released the album Instant Holograms on Metal Film in 2025.
