Memorials
Verity Susman (Electrelane) and Matthew Simms (Wire) — hypnotic motorik art-rock with woodwinds, synths, and film-score strangeness, pedigree put to genuinely new use.
Memorials is the duo of Verity Susman and Matthew Simms, formed in 2022. Susman was a founding member of Electrelane, the Brighton band known for its organ-driven, repetitive rock; Simms has played guitar with Wire and released solo work as It Hugs Back.
Their music draws on motorik rhythm and drone, layering guitar, synthesizers and Susman's saxophone and woodwind playing over steady pulses. The pair pull from folk, dub, post-punk, experimental tape music, sixties soul, garage rock and spiritual jazz, folding all of it into a sound that doesn't sit still.
The pair have also written and recorded scores for film, and that work feeds back into the records, which move between song forms and longer instrumental passages rather than settling into either.
Their second album, All Clouds Bring Not Rain, came out in March 2026, and Memorials have been touring behind it since.
