Richmond's garage-jazz five-piece fusing '70s fusion, boom-bap, and P-funk into a loose, heavy groove — a rhythm section that could back anyone and chooses to lead.
Butcher Brown formed in Richmond, Virginia, in 2009, working at the meeting point of jazz, funk and hip-hop production. The lineup includes drummer Corey Fonville, bassist Andrew Randazzo, keyboardist DJ Harrison, Marcus Tenney on trumpet and saxophone, and guitarist Morgan Burrs. DownBeat has called their sound a '70s jazz-funk fusion throwback.
Members have cited D'Angelo, the Headhunters, the Miles Davis Second Quintet, Return to Forever, the Robert Glasper Experiment, the Roots, Spyro Gyra and Weather Report as reference points, a spread that matches their sound's mix of 1970s electric fusion, soul-jazz and the drum feel and sampling logic of boom-bap.
Live, the band leans on extended grooves and improvisation, and individual members work widely as producers and session players outside the group. Their cover of Little Richard's "Rip It Up" was chosen as the theme song for Monday Night Football in September 2020.
In 2024 the band won the third annual Newlin Music Prize for their album Solar Music. The following year they released Letters from the Atlantic, featuring guest artists Yaya Bey, Melanie Charles, Leanor Wolf, Mia Gladstone and Victoria Victoria, along with Nicholas Payton and Neal Francis.
