Diaristic indie rock that pairs '90s alt guitar crunch with unguarded, quietly devastating songwriting — Sophie Allison's ache in high fidelity.

Soccer Mommy is the project of Sophie Allison, born Sophia Regina Allison in Zürich, Switzerland, in 1997 to a schoolteacher mother and a neuroscientist father who moved the family to Nashville while she was a toddler. She started playing guitar at six, formed her first band, Chemical X, in fourth grade, and later studied guitar at Nashville School of the Arts.

Allison began posting home recordings to Bandcamp under the Soccer Mommy name in 2015, shortly before leaving for New York University. A show at the Silent Barn in Bushwick led to a deal with Fat Possum Records, and she left college after two years to return to Nashville and expand the project from bedroom recordings into full-band arrangements.

The music combines 1990s alternative rock guitar textures with bedroom pop and dream pop production, pulling from Avril Lavigne, Taylor Swift, Slowdive and the Cure in a mix sometimes called "bubblegrunge." Allison writes in a diaristic first person, working through self-doubt, illness, grief and the mechanics of relationships, and her understated vocal delivery tends to sharpen rather than soften how direct the lyrics are.

Her catalogue runs from For Young Hearts in 2016 and Collection in 2017 through Clean in 2018, Color Theory in 2020 and Evergreen in 2024. Touring has put her alongside Paramore, Vampire Weekend, Wilco, Stephen Malkmus, Mitski, Kacey Musgraves, Phoebe Bridgers and Snail Mail, work that has made her one of the more prominent indie rock singer-songwriters to emerge in the 2020s.
