Nashville's cosmic guitar cartographer — instrumentals that feel like interstate sunsets, American primitive tradition with a widescreen lens.

William Tyler was born on December 25, 1979, in Nashville, son of songwriter Dan Tyler, who wrote "The Light in Your Eyes" for LeAnn Rimes and co-wrote hits for the Oak Ridge Boys and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Adele Tyler. With his sister Elise, he later ran The Stone Fox, a Nashville music venue and bar open from 2012 to 2016.

Before releasing music under his own name, Tyler joined Lambchop at nineteen after Kurt Wagner asked him to play organ, only to end up on guitar once it became clear he couldn't handle the keys. He also spent years playing with Silver Jews.

His solo work is largely instrumental, built on fingerpicked and electric guitar in the lineage of John Fahey and the American primitive tradition, beginning with his 2010 debut, Behold the Spirit.

Impossible Truth (2013) and Modern Country (2016) extend that approach with full-band arrangements, drones and long, unhurried structures; Rolling Stone named Modern Country among the best country albums of that year. Tyler has spoken about the American landscape and its history as a recurring subject.

He composed music for Kelly Reichardt's 2019 film First Cow, released as a soundtrack album the following year, produced Jake Xerxes Fussell's debut album in 2015, and co-produced Mary J. Blige's "Survivor" in 2017. More recently he collaborated with electronic producer Four Tet on the album 41 Longfield Street Late '80s, released in 2025.
