Non-hierarchical NC collective where old-time stringband tradition dissolves into DIY noise and drone — anywhere from two to twelve players.

Weirs is based in Durham, North Carolina, working at the point where Appalachian old-time string band music meets experimental practice. The group grew out of the broader central North Carolina music scene, drawing together players who also work in old-time and DIY noise contexts elsewhere.

Fiddle and banjo figures are stretched into sustained drones, and traditional tunes are used as raw material for extended, texture-led improvisation alongside noise and amplified sound, so a familiar melody can dissolve into a long tone before it resolves back into something recognizable.

The lineup is deliberately flexible rather than fixed, with the number of players varying considerably from one performance or recording to the next. Past configurations have run from as few as two people to as many as twelve, and the group operates without a single designated leader.

Musicians who have passed through Weirs include members of other North Carolina groups such as Sluice, Magic Tuber Stringband, Alli Blois and the Seeping Hearts, and Beak Trio, an overlap that reflects how closely connected the region's old-time and experimental circles are.
