Setting is a trio formed in 2021 in Durham, North Carolina, made up of Nathan Bowles, Jaime Fennelly and Joe Westerlund. All three arrived with substantial histories in experimental and folk-adjacent music: Bowles as a banjo player and percussionist, Fennelly through his long-running Mind Over Mirrors project built around harmonium and electronics, and Westerlund as a drummer and percussionist. Their music combines acoustic instruments with drone and electronic textures, built through slow-developing improvisation rather than conventional song forms, and tends toward long, gradually shifting pieces.
