Montreal producer whose chopped-vocal house helped define a whole strand of the 2010s — 'Another Girl' glow, still radiating.

Jacques Greene is the recording name of Philippe Aubin-Dionne, a producer and DJ born in 1989 who came up in Montreal and is now based in Toronto. He first got into electronic music after a high school history teacher played him Aphex Twin, an encounter that he has said made him realise music did not have to be angry men playing guitars. With friends including Lunice he ran a series of club nights in Montreal called Turbo Crunk between 2008 and 2011.

He emerged in the early 2010s with tracks built from clipped, pitched R&B vocal samples set over house and UK garage rhythms, a template that circulated widely through the LuckyMe label and beyond. His 2011 single 'Another Girl' was later named among Pitchfork's best tracks of the first half of that decade.

His full-length work, including Feel Infinite, released on LuckyMe in 2017, and Dawn Chorus, extends that approach into longer-form records that sit between club functionality and something closer to ambient pop.

Alongside his own releases he has produced for vocalists including Katy B, Tinashe and How to Dress Well, and remixed artists such as Radiohead, Ciara and Shlohmo. He co-owns Vase Records, a label he started in 2011 with former manager Joe Coghill, whose roster has included Koreless, Ango and Samoyed alongside a pair of Montreal fashion designers. His live and DJ sets keep the same balance of blurred vocal fragments and physical low end.
