Blood Orange is the recording name of Devonté Hynes, an English musician who first appeared in the mid-2000s with the hardcore-influenced band Test Icicles, then recorded folk-leaning material as Lightspeed Champion before moving to New York. Under the Blood Orange name he makes music built from soft synthesizers, clean guitar lines, funk and soul rhythms, and vocals that rarely rise above a murmur.

The records often include spoken passages and guest voices, and address race, identity and belonging alongside more personal material. Hynes has also written and produced for other artists and composed for film and dance, and he plays several instruments across his own recordings.
