Mariah the Scientist, born Mariah Amani Buckles in 1997, graduated high school early and enrolled at St. John's University in New York, aiming to become a pediatric anesthesiologist, before dropping out during her junior year to pursue music, confiding only in her mother.

She was discovered by Tory Lanez less than a year after leaving school, toured with him, and signed to his label One Umbrella alongside RCA Records. Her debut album, Master, arrived in 2019, executive produced by Lanez, following an earlier six-track EP, To Die For, self-released on SoundCloud.

Her second album, Ry Ry World, followed in 2021 and featured a guest appearance from Young Thug, released amid rumors the two were dating. Afterward she parted ways with Lanez and RCA, self-releasing music independently under the name Buckles Laboratory.

She later signed to Epic Records, where her third album, To Be Eaten Alive, became her first entry on the Billboard 200 in 2023.

Her 2025 singles "Burning Blue" and "Is It a Crime", the latter with Kali Uchis, gave her first entries on the Billboard Hot 100 as a lead artist, both reaching the chart's top 30 ahead of her fourth album, Hearts Sold Separately.
