Atlanta's prog-sludge institution — concept records about doom and grief, played with genuinely uncommon musicianship and harmonized howls.

Mastodon formed in Atlanta in 2000 and has kept the same line-up throughout: Brent Hinds and Bill Kelliher on guitars, Troy Sanders on bass and Brann Dailor on drums, with Hinds, Sanders and Dailor all contributing vocals. Their early records were rooted in sludge metal, and albums such as Leviathan and Crack the Skye pushed towards longer, more intricate progressive structures, often organised around a central concept — Moby-Dick in the case of Leviathan.

Later work has brought in cleaner singing and more direct song forms while retaining the band's dense riffing and Dailor's busy, melodic drumming. They have won a Grammy for the song "Sultan's Curse".
