DOWN formed in New Orleans in 1991 as a side project uniting musicians from several established Southern metal bands, with Pantera's Phil Anselmo on vocals and Pepper Keenan of Corrosion of Conformity on guitar. The lineup has shifted over the years, but the core idea has stayed constant: slow, thick, Sabbath-descended riffing played with a Louisiana accent.

The band's records move between crushing doom, bluesy Southern rock and acoustic interludes, and their debut established them as a fixture of the New Orleans heavy scene alongside groups like Eyehategod and Crowbar. DOWN has operated intermittently between its members' other commitments, releasing full-lengths and a series of EPs.
